Abstract

Hepatitis A is a disease caused by the Hepatitis A virus and spreads through food or water contaminated with infected feces. In May 2016, there was a Hepatitis A outbreak at the Islamic Boarding School in Kebumen. The shortage of personal hygiene can lead to the transmission of hepatitis A. Lack of behavior is a result of a lack of information about hepatitis A. To improve practice, health education can be given about personal hygiene. This study aimed to analyze the influence of private hygiene education in snowball throwing methods on hepatitis A disease prevention behavior at one of Islamic boarding school in Kebumen. This study used a pre-experimental research design with one group pre-test-post-test. The sampling technique used a total sampling of 58 people. The independent variable was personal hygiene education with the snowball throwing method and hepatitis a prevention behavior as a dependent variable. Retrieval of data used questionnaires for knowledge and attitudes while interviews with action. Statistical tests used Wilcoxon signed-rank test α <0.05. There was a difference between before and after the intervention at the level of knowledge p=0.000, attitude p=0.000, action p=0.000. The personal hygiene education of the snowball throwing method could improve hepatitis A prevention behavior among respondents. This method was suitable for nurses to use for health education in Islamic boarding schools, hoped that the practice of health education could be carried out continuously by nurses to improve the clean and healthy behavior of students.
