Abstract

Consumer demands increases for high quality fruits during marketing period which is required to apply new safe techniques postharvest that enhance fruit quality. So, the target of this study was to evaluate of some natural medicinal plant extracts such as; pomegranate fruit peel (PPE), moringa leaves (MLE) and jojoba leaves (JLE) to extend fruits marketing period and to preserve the fruit quality of Le Conte pear. Mature fruits were treated by dipping for 5 minutes in 10% aqueous solution of each above mentioned plant extract, separately and another fruits were dipped in tap water in same time (control). Every treatments were stored at 0 ± 1ºC and 85 – 90% relative humidity (RH) for 105 days plus one week after cold storage at room temperature as simulated marketing period, were conducted throughout 2018 and 2019 seasons. Results indicated that there was no visible sign of decay in coated or control fruit until day 30 of the cold storage period. Thereafter, the coatings reduced decay compared to uncoated and fruit treated with PPE or MLE coating remained decay free even after 75 days of storage, in the second season. Likewise, all fruit coated showed a significant delay in fruit softness, reduction of weight loss (%), total acidity (%) and increase of total soluble solids (%) compared to uncoated fruits. The results suggest that by using pomegranate fruit peel extract as an edible coating had more effective to prolong storability and marketing period with maintain fruit quality of Le Conte pear.
