Abstract

Glutathione S-transferases (GST) are multi-functional proteins involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics and responsible for protecting cells against oxidative stress. The present study investigated the inhibition effects of Ciprofloxacin on GST enzymes in the liver, renal, and pulmonary tissues of the rat. Sixty Wistar rats were separated into 4 groups, 15 rats each (I–IV). Distilled water was used for intraperitoneally injection of group I (control), however rats in other three groups (II, III, and IV) were injected with 50mg/kg, 100mg/kg, and 150mg/kg of Ciprofloxacin, respectively. The inhibitory effects of the Ciprofloxacin doses were evaluated after 2, 4 and 6 hours. The activity of GST enzyme was significantly inhibited in response to Ciprofloxacin doses at different periods and tissues (p<0.05). In all animal groups, GST activity in hepatic tissue was inhibited against the control group almost in all the intervals (p<0.05). For renal tissues, GSH enzyme activities were inhibited in the groups (II-IV) from 2nd until the end of the 4th hour period, whereas activation was observed in the next periods (p<0.05). Furthermore, in pulmonary tissues, the inhibitory effect on Glutathione enzyme activity was observed during the 4th h in Ciprofloxacin groups compared to the control, while after 6 hours, the enzyme showed a different response and has a recovered activity. (p<0.05).
